Tybee Arts Association Continues to Evolve
The Arts Association is making progress in remaking itself to better
represent Tybee Island. Business meetings are held regularly but alternate
with "salon" evenings for artists and friends of the arts to enjoy. Salon
evenings can take shape in many ways. Some meetings are educational --
demonstrations or critiques of artist works. Some are just creative fun --
sandcastle building on the beach. Dance and drama groups are forming and
there are some projects and events being planned with other organizations on
the island. A new education director will be in place soon and the
education programs which were once were so vital to the Association will
begin again. The Tybee Festival for the Arts on the Pavilion is scheduled
for the weekend of October 18th and 19th and plans are for the show to
return to its roots as a more selective, juried exhibit for fine art and
craft, according to this year's director, Mary Ingalls who was the original
founder of the event seven years ago.
The Arts Association is in a membership building mode and encourages both
artists and friends of the arts to join. Meetings are the second Monday of
the month and are usually held at the old Tybee school at 7:00 PM. Call
president, Anne Monaghan at 786-7117 for more information and a membership
application. Get the application online.
Bonsai at the Dragonfly
Sonjia Dittmar will sponsor the Mame Bonsai Collection with Luigi Trapani
at her Dragonfly Studio. This unique workshop will feature tiny trees,
ferns, herbs, grasses and flowering plants. All materials are included in
the workshop fee. Join the fun at the Dragonfly on May 17th or 24th from
10:00 AM until 3:00 PM with a 1 hour lunch break. The fee for the workshop
is $75.00. Call Sonjia at 786-4431 for more information.
New Gallery Hours
The Gallery by the Sea has announced new hours for the summer. The
gallery, located next to the Visitor Center, will be open from 9:30 AM until
5 PM on Sunday through Wednesday and from 9:30 Am until 7 PM on Thursday
through Saturday. Mildred Hill, gallery director, has announced that the
gallery will be selling Rowan Wolfe's first book, "The Trial of Evan Gage."
And coming soon, Rowan's second offering, "Incident at Tybee Island" will be
available. The second book is a sequel and Ms. Wolfe recommends reading
them in order. To find out more about Rowan and the book, visit
www.rowanwolfe.com.
Serendipity Gallery Tour is Coming!
The Tybee Arts Association will sponsor the annual Summer Evening
Serendipity at local galleries on June 21st. The tour will be a visual
feast for art lovers with each participating gallery offering up special
fare for the event. There will be a jewelry fashion show and afternoon tea
at the Gallery by the Sea; "arty" table settings and new works by Linda
Lindeborg at Nautilus Studio Gallery; and at the Dragonfly Studio, a body
and bath celebration with natural body treats, sculpture and figurative
paintings. Look for all the details in the next Tybee News.
Tybee Island's Thanks to the Troops
The US flag flew from the Lighthouse Gallery on the first anniversary of
September 11th and the 4th of July to remind us all of our tragedies and our
triumphs. Now the yellow ribbon flies as a symbolic gesture of pride and
prayer for our armed services serving our nation in the Middle East. No
words can express the collective appreciation of our community nor our
country to these brave men and women. Hopefully, their friends and their
families will see and understand our small statement of support and let
their service personnel know that they are in our hearts and minds everyday
they are in harmıs way.
There is a way our community can express its heartfelt appreciation to
the armed forces and their families, a way all citizens of Tybee can support
and take part in. On Saturday, May 17, Armed Forces Day, those who feel a
sense of gratitude can join hands with their friends, family and neighbors
at the Tybee Island Lighthouse in order to spell out on a human scale our
suupport for our military service personnel. Tybee citizens will form a huge
THANK YOU in the open field at the light station. Savannah Aviation has
donated a plane and pilot, thanks to Lynnette Manning. Kathleen Collins will
help position the supporters in the correct positions and photographer
Teresa McGraw will capture the community expression on film to be sent to
all national media and military websites.
If you want to join in this gigantic gesture, please call Cullen Chambers
at 786-5801.
